Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing arm of e-commerce giant Amazon, on Thursday introduced a new payments system designed for AI agents, hailed as the first of its kind for a major cloud provider.
The new AgentCore Payments is now in preview, according to a blog post last week from Amazon, and it's designed for AI developers to give agents the ability to pay for pay for web content and other services via APIs, MCP servers and other agents "within a single execution loop."
Under the hood, according to Amazon, the payment flow is built around the x402 protocol, an open standard developed by the U.S. crypto exchange Coinbase for stablecoin micropayments.
Developers wire an agent to either a Coinbase wallet or a Stripe Privy wallet and set per-session spending limits. When an agent hits a paid endpoint and gets back a "402" response, indicating a payment is required, AgentCore authenticates, pays, and delivers the content without breaking the reasoning loop.
Coinbase figures prominently in deal
AWS is also making the Coinbase x402 Bazaar MCP server available through the AgentCore gateway, letting agents discover paid endpoints on their own.
"There will soon be more AI agents transacting than humans, and they need money that's built for the internet, programmable, always on, and global," said Brian Foster, head of infrastructure growth and strategy at Coinbase.
Coinbase, in its own blog post, described the release of AgentCore payments as "the first time any major cloud platform has developed a solution that helps developers build crypto micropayments directly into their agents."
